Frozen Watercolors for Outdoor Painting

After a morning of car inspections and a new tire that took two hours to install, we needed a fun afternoon diversion and some outdoor time. These frozen watercolors for outdoor painting were a huge hit, got the kids outside and a bit active, and allowed the creativity to flow!

How to Make Frozen Watercolors on a Stick

Prior to our outings, I froze a mixture of food coloring and water in mini muffin tins and stuck half of a small craft stick in each. They froze solid into vibrant, easily-held, all-in-one watercolors.

Frozen Watercolor Painting for Kids

Despite hundred degree temperatures in the great state of Texas, I tacked a large sheet of paper to the fence out back, made sure the kids were wearing play clothes, and let Luke and Lila paint away.

The frozen watercolors melted as they ran them over the paper, leaving an abstract work of art.

They loved the colors, loved painting, loved watching the icy paints melt, and loved creating a pretty work of art together.

The color came off on their hands but should fade away in the bathtub … but getting messy on a Friday afternoon also isn’t the biggest concern to me.  Since the paints are made with food coloring, the dye shouldn’t be at all toxic on their skin.

My older kids even got in on the fun. It’s great to find something that all four kids of varying ages want to do together.

Lila couldn’t resist doing a little face-painting as well. Like the hands, her nose still sports a nice shade of yellow {wink}.

I think the collaborative effort of the final masterpiece is beautiful.

I’m going to cut it and use it for note cards and letters to grandparents the same way we’ve recycled art in the past.

This was a great afternoon craft and I’m sure the kids will want to do it again.  It’s definitely an idea we’ll add to our list of creative activities for kids!

I’m going to have to break out the thesaurus to come up with another way to say “awesome.” As usual, I’m impressed by you’re creativity.
