I’m really drawn to different textures and textiles and I love the turn that knitting has taken in recent years, expanding into home decor.  A knit piece in the home adds instant warmth and even color, if desired.  This easy envelope-style knit pillow pattern was really easy to whip up and adds the perfect element to a chair in our dining room.

If you’ve read other knitting posts of mine, you already know that I love seeing a knit piece in a room.  The knit lampshade cover I made for a wall sconce is still one of my favorite quirky projects.

For the last few months I’ve been puttering away on a pillow to liven up a vintage chair in my dining room. I finished it tonight and I love the warmth it adds to the room.  And don’t worry … while this project has taken me months to complete, it can be whipped up in just a few hours if you get down to it {smile}.

How to Make a Knit Pillow

To make this knit pillow, I used the garter stitch pillow pattern from Sarah Dallas Knitting, a book I love.  I’d highly recommend ordering the book if you don’t have it but you can also make a very similar pillow without the full pattern.

Simply cast on enough stitches to cover a pillow form and allow for a seam allowance on both sides, rib for about four rows, then knit a long enough strip to cover the pillow and overlap for an envelope closure at the back.

The envelope closure is a nice tailored touch.

This pattern switches to a garter stitch along with a color change about half way through.  You obviously can make any changes you want to suit your style.

Finish with a few rows of ribbing, cast off, then stitch up the sides, with the pieces overlapping a bit on the back.  Once stitched up, slide a pillow insert into the case and you’re finished!

These kinds of simple knitting projects are my favorites and the perfect way to add a handmade element to your home!

I can’t wait to post a picture of the new pillows I bought for the couch in our family room… we like the same style/colors.

    Beautiful pillow.
