Muffin Tin Herb Garden

Repurposed crafts are my favorites, both inside and out, and this muffin tin herb garden is the latest addition to my backyard … and such a cute and easy project for summer.  I’ve joined up with some of my favorite bloggers today to share a whole pile of outdoor projects that all started with garage sale treasures, thrift store finds, and dumpster dives!  So fun, right?  Check out my herb garden then click on the links at the bottom of this post to see all of the other amazing projects!

I was browsing through the thrift store a few weeks ago and found a jumbo muffin tin and I knew it would make a super cute herb or succulent garden.  You could also use a regular sized muffin tin but the jumbo cups will hold the plants a bit better.

In addition to the muffin tin, I bought six different herbs.  When you’re looking for herbs, the smaller, the better, and choose herbs that won’t necessarily grow tall.  I chose marjoram, mint, oregano, bee balm, rosemary, and lemon balm.  I chose a bit of a random mix and a few herbs that I’ve never grown before but that I want to experiment with a bit in my cooking.  Apparently lemon balm is delicious in salads!

You may or may not need additional potting soil.  The soil that came in the pots was plenty for the muffin cups but add more as needed for your muffin pan.

Simply plant the herbs into each individual muffin cup.  You may need to remove some of the soil in the bottom of each pot.  This may disrupt the root system a bit but shouldn’t affect the overall health of the plant.

Lightly water the herbs.  Texas is really hot so I don’t worry that the dirt will stay too wet {and I’m no master gardener!} but if you’re concerned about drainage, place some small rocks in the bottom of the cups before you add the plant or drill tiny holes into the bottom of the muffin tin.

When planting, consider the placement.  I put the taller plants in the center and placed the crawling plants in the outer cups so they’ll trail down as they grow.

… and I can easily pop out the kitchen door to snip some herbs for a recipe!  And if you don’t like the idea of herbs, fill your muffin tin with a variety of cacti or succulents for a little garden that’s totally on trend!

I was just thinking about shopping for a vintage muffin pan down at my local antique mall. This is such a cute idea and great space saver too.

This is a great idea, our climate is quite hot too so there wouldn’t be any problem with the soil being too wet.

Cute idea. I usually do a small herb container garden each spring. If it warms up here I’ll use my old rusty muffin tin!

Good idea! Love how they will grow in mass. Plus you can place them anywhere for little decor outside. Pinned!

I love this idea and of course it would be super cute with succulents planted in it also.

How Cute! It does get extremely hot here in Texas, so no worries of the soil staying damp.
