DIY Skater Shirt

These days, Luke is all about his skateboard {which is actually more like a scooter but he swears it’s a skateboard with a handle} and I decided to make him a cute DIY skater shirt to wear.  I used a regular shirt, added a couple of different mediums, and I love the way it turned out!

I Am Momma-Hear Me Roar was hosting a Let’s Hear It For the Boys contest and I decided it would be a good motivator for me to get a craft project finished.  The rules were simple: create a top for a boy.  The creations are all being linked up today and I can’t wait to see all of the amazing ideas.

How to Make a DIY Skater Shirt

I liked the idea of creating a shirt that a boy would love.

Luke has always thought skateboarding was pretty cool so I downloaded a skater image, bonded orange fabric with heat and bond, then cut the image out with my cutting machine.

I used an iron to adhere the image to a store-bought striped shirt then stitched it around the edges.  I stitched the shape in blue thread to contrast with the orange image and coordinate with the shirt and I love the way it looks.

The heat and bond will keep the edges from fraying.

The shirt needed a little something else so I used white heat transfer material to add the word skate to the sleeve.  I really love this final touch and it even got a vote of approval from my thirteen year old so it must be cool {wink}.

Luke tried the shirt on and felt compelled to do a few awesome tricks on his Diego skateboard {smile}.

That kid just makes me laugh.  I have a feeling this shirt will end up being one of Luke’s favorites.
