Lighting the Home with Smart Light Bulbs

I hate entering a dark room or a dark house.  You know that moment when you turn off all the lights in the house and head to bed but the bedroom is completely dark?  I hate it.  That’s why I’m so excited about lighting my home with smart light bulbs!

When I was browsing at The Home Depot, I came across an endcap for the Wink Hub, a simple way to link different items in your home to a smart phone or tablet.  I was intrigued by the idea of using an app on my smart phone to turn lights on and off in my home … even if I’m nowhere near my house!

I bought the Wink Hub and a GE LED Link Bulb and went home to experiment.

The Wink Hub is a simple device that plugs into a wall outlet and accesses your home wifi.  I downloaded the free app and walked through each step until the Wink Hub was set up.

Then I put the GE Link Bulb in my bedroom wall sconce.  The bulbs are available at The Home Depot for the low price of $14.97 each.

With one touch to the screen, I could turn my bedside light off …

… and on.  Crazy!  No more tripping over the treadmill as I walk through a dark house.  I can turn the bedside light on while I’m sitting in another room.  I can even turn it on while I’m out which means my poor puppy dog won’t have to be left in the dark if we’re out late.

More than one bulb can be linked to the app which means I can also link up my front light.  I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been lying in bed, wondering if I left the front light on for my teens.  Now I can control it from bed with my smart phone or tablet!  And I won’t have to count on someone leaving the front light on for me when I’m coming home late.  I love the added security and the ease with which I can get it!

Have you tried a smart system in your home?

This is interesting! I’ve been looking for a way to turn my front light on when I’m on my way home from work before it gets dark. This would be a great way to do that!

I would love to be able to set my entire home up with the remote controlled system! How convenient!
