Family Hands Wall Art

I finally completed a project I’ve wanted to do for years. Now that our family is complete after the birth of our fifth child {it really is this time, I promise}, I made this family hands wall art, an idea I saw in a magazine years ago.  I love the way this simple project captures all the hands in a snapshot in time, some tiny and some large.  It’s a really great way to create a sentimental piece of wall art!

To make this family hands wall art, I traced each family member’s hand and cut it out from coordinating scrapbook paper.  I chose paper that matches the colors in my home but you can obviously choose any color or pattern you like.

Once cut out, I filed the edges to rough them up a bit.  I love a bit of a distressed look and I wanted the edges of the paper to have a sanded appearance instead of looking perfectly trimmed.

I laid the hand cut-outs haphazardly on top of each other, placing them right on the frame background.  You could also cover the background with a piece of scrapbook paper or fabric but I liked the look of the rustic cardboard.

I started with the largest hand at the top of the frame and placed the others on top of that hand in birth order, gluing them in place as I went along and arranging them so all hands show at least somewhat. Elijah’s almost-teenager hand is almost as big as mine!

I added some chipboard numbers to mark the year …

… and hung it in our upstairs hallway as a fun memento of our family in this stage of life.  There’s something so sweet about handprints!

Very cute idea, I love how it’s one of a kind and a great keepsake. I love handprint projects, I used to make handprint calendars with my kindergarten classes. I still hear from parents who have kept them and reuse them over and over – they laminated them. Would love you to join me at A Crafty Soiree, every Thursday.
