DIY Upcycled Capri Sun Tote Bag

I created this upcycled Capri Sun tote bag as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars.  #CapriSunMomFactor

Summertime means lots of heat and lots of cold drinks and Capri Sun Juice Drinks are a staple in our house.  I love the ease of grabbing a pouch, especially when we’re on the go, and I feel good about giving my kids a drink that has no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.  With all those empty pouches left behind, I thought it would be fun to upcycle them into a tote bag!

To make this large tote bag, you’ll need 44 empty Capri Sun pouches.  If you don’t have that many empty pouches, you could always use less and make a smaller bag using the same concept.

Be sure to clean the pouches before you use them to get rid of any sticky juice.

To make this tote bag, I used my glue gun.  Simply place a line of glue along the edge of one pouch …

… and overlap the glue line with another Capri Sun pouch.

To form the large sides of the bag, glue four Capri Sun pouches in a row and then attach three rows together to form a large rectangle.

how to make the sides of the bag

To form the narrow sides of the pouch, you’ll need three pouches per side.  Fold each pouch in half lengthwise to form a crease …

… then glue the three creased pouches together end to end.  Attach the long edges of those three joined pouches to the front and back.  Be sure the glue line is on the inside of both pieces and make sure the crease runs down the middle of that side.

The bottom is the trickiest part.  You’ll need three pouches.  Glue three sides of one pouch to one side of the bottom {as seen on the right side of the bottom in the picture below}.  Repeat on the other side of the pouch.  Glue one more pouch centered in the middle and attach it to the bag front and back as well as the other two pouches forming the bottom.

Every good tote bag needs a little pocket.  Glue three sides of a pouch to the middle of the front of the bag.  I used the plain side of the pouch so it would have some contrast with the bag and covered the edge in fabric tape.

The last step is to form the handles.  Glue five pouches end to end for each handle, then fold lengthwise into thirds and glue it together.

Attach the handles evenly to the inside of the bag.

That’s it!  An upcycled Capri Sun tote bag is so simple to make and is the perfect accessory for trips to the beach, the park, or the pool.  Throw the towels in, tuck a pair of sunglasses into the pocket, and you’re all set!

I was preparing to be disappointed when I clicked over only because I figured this project required sewing. Big fat YAY for a no-sew bag using these recycled pouches! We would have 44 pouches in a week if my boys had their way 😉 Super fun project, Randi!
