DIY Dip Dyed Lampshade

I’ve been working on a few small projects around the house, trying to unpack the few remaining boxes in the garage.  Since I moved a year ago I think it’s definitely time {wink}!  I finished making a table for the corner of my gathering room {I’ll share that upcycled project soon} and it gave me a spot to put my repurposed coffee pot lamp.  I made this lamp years ago and I still absolutely love it but I’ve always had a hard time finding the right shade for it.  I’m still not convinced this is exactly right {I think I need something a bit longer} but in the meantime, this simple DIY dip dyed lampshade looks pretty cute and adds a subtle bit of color to the corner of the room.

To make this dip dyed lampshade, I bought a plain white fabric shade and used golden yellow Rit dye that I had in my craft stash, left over from the candy corn dress I made a few years ago for Tate.

I filled a large plastic drink bucket with hot water and added the dye until the color looked like the shade I wanted.

To test it, I dipped a piece of white fabric into the dye mixture.  That’ll give you a fairly good indication of how the lamp shade will dye although different fabrics will take the dye in different ways.

Once I had a shade I was happy with, I set the lampshade down into the bucket and let it sit for a few minutes.

I decided to dip the top of my shade but you can obviously dip the top or bottom, depending on your preference.

I removed the shade from the dye bath and let it sit to dry completely.  Don’t rinse it.  It did dry a bit lighter than I thought it would so remember that when you’re figuring out the original color.

To complete the shade and add a bit of whimsy, I hot glued pom pom trim around the bottom edge.

It’s a cute complement to the shade.

… and is a fun accessory for the gathering room.

This little corner spot is now a favorite place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee!
