A Tile Ring

After I made my scrabble tile ring {inspired by this beauty} at the Pinterest party, I had some requests for a tutorial.  Let me say that this is the bohunk version of the real deal that you can buy on etsy but I’ll tell you what I did.

I started by painting the scrabble tile in different colors and then sanding randomly to get a distressed look.  I used only certain colors in some areas so the coloring would vary on the ring.  I think I’m going to try using some crackle medium on the next one I make and see how that turns out.  This time around, I put a coat of Mod Podge over the paint to seal it.  I didn’t do that on the first one and it hasn’t yet made any difference.

After I had a color I was happy with, and it was dry, I hot glued a ring onto the back.  You can find the rings in the jewelry section of any craft store.  You don’t want a base bigger than 18 mm or it’ll show from the sides and front.

The metal pieces I used are actually bead caps.  They come in various styles and metallic tones and they’re the only thing I could find that would give me the look I wanted.

The bead caps are rounded but one tap with a hammer flattens them right out.
Decide how you want the metal pieces to sit on the ring and then bend the sides around the scrabble tile.  A little tap with the hammer helps with this as well.  I used Gorilla Glue Super Glue to affix the metal pieces.  You could use a number of different products but you want something that isn’t going to swell up through the fine holes in the bead caps.

I love these rings.  They’re so different looking and so quick to put together.

I’d love to hear if you make one.
