A Knit Football Baby Hat

Someone I love just had the cutest baby boy.  She and her husband also happen to be big football fans so a knit football hat for the baby seemed just right.  This simple knit hat starts with a standard baby hat pattern and adds a simple twist to turn it into the perfect fashion accessory for the smallest football fan!

knit football hat for a baby
I used a simple baby hat pattern from Itty-Bitty Hats {one of my favorite knitting books} and modified it with just a few simple steps to make it look like a football.  If you don’t have a knitting pattern for a standard baby hat, you can easily find a free one on pinterest or on the ravelry website.

I knit this little football hat with brown yarn and then added three rows of white yarn near the top and bottom of the hat.  I also added some football stitch lines to finish it off.  I just used a large plastic tapestry needle and white yarn to stitch the lines over the knit stitches.

Decreasing to just a few stitches at the top of the hat and then pulling the decrease stitches tightly on top gave the hat the perfect pointed football end.  Be careful not to pull too tightly or you’ll break the yarn.  Once you’ve pulled the yarn in and tapered the hat, use a tapestry needle to sew the remaining yarn piece into the inside of the hat.

I love a rolled hem so I just cast on without creating any type of rib but if you prefer a more formal look, you can always add a few rows of ribbing when you first start knitting.

I love the way this little hat turned out … now I can’t wait for a chance to snuggle the little one who’ll wear it!

I used another pattern and just altered it. You should be able to find a baby hat pattern online and just use these simple ideas to modify it.

Expecting our first great grandson in September ( we will have 8 great grands by the new year). So excited to make something “Boy” for him. I bought the book. Could you please tell me which pattern and what yarn you recommend. Thanks!

You can use the basic pattern of almost any of the hats and use that for the beginning {the bunny tail hat will work great}. Then, once you get the main part of the hat made, use the tips in this tutorial to create the football.
