A Christmas Table Runner {in Burlap}

Remember the seamed burlap tablecloth I made a few weeks ago?  Well, I just made a burlap table runner for my Christmas table.

{And photographed it without ironing anything … just a glimpse of real life.}

This table runner is so simple!  It’s made from a length of burlap {twelve inches wide} and four pieces of ribbon.

I measured the length of burlap I wanted, then measured four pieces of ribbon, two for the sides and two for the ends {the ribbon pieces are a bit longer than the burlap to accommodate the mitered corners}.

I sewed the corners of the ribbon together with mitered corners and I’ll show you my little cheating trick.

I folded the corner of the ribbon across itself and ironed it …

… then opened it up.  The ironed line is the line you’ll want to stitch on.  If everyone already knows that, can we just pretend I made it up?

Pin the ribbon with right sides together and stitch across the ironed line.

I trimmed close to the stitches and used a bit of fray check to prevent the edges from unraveling.

Iron it open and you have your mitered corner.

I repeated that for each corner and then laid it around the burlap and glued it in place.  Yep, I glued it.  Are you gasping?  I was worried that the burlap would just pull apart if I stitched it so I just popped out the glue gun and glued it down.  Works for me.

I think it’ll look so pretty on our Christmas table.  I love the bright red against the burlap and the mix of rustic and cute.

Do you use burlap in your Christmas decor?

The burlap used for this project was provided by BurlapFabric.com for this post … now I’m just enjoying using the leftovers.

    It looks great Randi. I especially like that it is glued. Even I could attempt something like it. 🙂

    I’m crafting myself a Burlap & Lace Christmas. I’ve never used it before but this year the blogs have been pulling amazing crafts with burlap and somehow the idea started growing… let’s see if I like the final result.
    I like yours. Is fantastic – happy and fun inducing, like all Christmas – Dukes’, Duchesses’ and Peasants’ – should 🙂
    Enjoy!

    Sooo cute and easy. Love the corners. I have sewn burlap before and its not too bad to sew. I’m going to try this with a little zig zag stitch to keep with the informal feel. I might even make one for my sister to match.
