Nuts in their shells always make me think of the holiday season.  Growing up, we would often have bowls of nuts sitting out at Christmas and my brother and I loved cracking the shells and eating the nuts inside.  I couldn’t resist buying a whole assortment of nuts when I was in the store this week and creating something fun for Thanksgiving!  This turkey nut platter is a whimsical way to provide an easy little snack on Thanksgiving Day without ruining appetites for the big dinner ahead!

To make a turkey nut platter for Thanksgiving Day, you’ll need a large plate or platter, a nut cracker, and an assortment of nuts in their shells.  This time of year, you can typically find a great assortment at any grocery store, usually in the produce area.

Make the head of the turkey by placing smaller nuts {these are hazelnuts} in a small clear dish at the bottom center of the tray.

Then simply create rows of nuts around and above that dish, stacking them up and creating a curve to look like tail feathers.  I used more hazelnuts, walnuts, and almonds.  A variety of sizes and tones will make the turkey look better.

Raid your vegetable or fruit bin for something to use for eyes and a beak.  I used small carrot slices for eyes and a piece of yellow pepper for the nose but anything would work: grapes, olives, red pepper.

Add a nut cracker for legs and you have a super fun and festive snack for Thanksgiving Day!
