Gourmet Grilled Cheese with Goat Cheese and Blueberry Preserves

The other day I had a lunch meeting at a local, trendy grilled cheese restaurant.  Rather than order a standard menu item, I chose the create-your-own option and created a gourmet grilled cheese with goat cheese and blueberry preserves and it was delicious!  I recently recreated the sandwich at home and have to share the recipe with you because it’s an absolute favorite!

To make this gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, you’ll need good bread {I like to use an artisan bread but any bread is delicious}, thinly sliced black forest ham, crumbled goat cheese, thinly sliced red onion, and blueberry jelly or preserves.

Spread one slice of bread generously with blueberry preserves, add a generous helping of crumbled goat cheese, and top with a few thin slices of black forest ham and thinly sliced red onions.  If desired, you can saute the onions first but the strength of the raw onion is a really great addition to the sandwich.

Melt a teaspoon of butter in a pan over low-medium heat and cook the sandwich, flipping over when the first side has browned, and cooking until the cheese has partially or fully melted.  Cut in half and serve … and be prepared for a delicious blend of sweet and savory all melted up in a sandwich!
