I used leftover orange yarn from my yarn stash. Orange is my favorite color and I love having pops of it in my home. I’ve never been a neutral decorator, opting instead for lots of bright colors, wherever possible.
I knit this lampshade cover on circular needles. I cast on stitches until I had enough to cover the existing shade, then continued knitting until the piece was long enough to cover the shade.
If you want something more tailored looking, you can add ribs to both ends. I wanted more of a whimsical look so I simply cast on and off and let the edges roll.
The lampshade I covered was a drum style, with no angles. If you’re covering an angled shade, you’ll need to increase the stitches to accommodate the angles.
Once cast off, I just slid the knit lampshade right over the regular lampshade, covering most of the other shade, and adjusted it as needed.
I think it looks super cute and it’s a colorful and whimsical addition to our decor, which suits my eclectic decorating style perfectly.
It took very little time to knit this lampshade and if I decide I’m ready for a change, I can easily remove it and go back to the old style or change it up with something else.
A knit lampshade is a great way to add texture and color to a living space … and it would even be a great way to cover up a lampshade that you don’t like.

I don’t know why but this post makes me wonder what you’ll be up to when you’re old. I was about to say that I can’t wait but… yes, I can! Love you and all your ideas.

This is awesome. I love the color! What yarn did you use, how much, and what size needles?

It took less than half a skein but I can’t tell exactly how much. The yarn is Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton and I used US 9 needles.
