5 Steps for Planning Your Garden

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Miracle-Gro®. The opinions and text are all mine.

Spring has arrived and I’m so ready to get planting.  Last weekend we got outside and got our hands dirty, planting two of the gardens in our front yard.  After years of failed gardens and dead plants, I have it down to a bit of a science with five steps for planning your garden.

To make it easy, I’ve got a colorful graphic to pin.
gardening tips

1. Theme.

Plan your garden to fit your lifestyle.  Decide whether you want a certain color or a certain theme {a pizza garden, perhaps?} and don’t forget to think about the amount of sunlight your garden gets.  If your garden is covered by trees, be sure to buy shade-loving plants.  Or maybe you’re too busy for a full garden and a container garden is just right for you.

2. Sketch.

Draw a simple diagram of the garden.  This will give you a good idea of how many plants and flowers you’ll need and will take the guesswork out of gardening.

3. Plant.

Get planting!  Be sure to pull any weeds from the garden, sift the soil, and add any extra garden soil that you might need.

I let the kids get out their toy rakes and sift through the dirt, spreading it throughout the garden.  They think it’s fun and it saves me a pile of time.

Then get those plants and flowers in the ground, making sure the appropriate space is left between them.  My garden always looks a bit skimpy in the early days but once the plants fill out, it looks great!

4. Mulch.

While mulching might seem like one more unnecessary step, mulch will help keep moisture in your garden while keeping weeds out.  And in our hot climate, mulch helps keep our water bill down!

5. Schedule.

Figure out a feeding schedule.  Plants need more than just water.  The Miracle Gro LiquaFeed Universal Feeder allows you to feed your plants the right amount of nutrients while you water without any extra steps.
